Quick relationships worth remembering

• 1 acre = 4,840 sq yards = 43,560 sq ft = 0.4047 hectare
• 1 hectare = 2.471 acres = 10,000 sq metres
• 1 gaj (square yard) = 9 sq ft — useful for plot sizes quoted in North India
• 1 kanal = 20 marla = 5,445 sq ft = 605 sq yards
• 100 cents = 1 acre — the standard relationship in South India

Carpet area, built-up area and super built-up area

When buying a flat, be clear about which area you are paying for. Carpet area is the usable floor area within the walls. Built-up area adds the walls and balcony. Super built-up area adds a share of common areas such as lobbies and staircases, and is typically 20–35% larger than carpet area. Under RERA, developers must quote carpet area.

Why regional units still matter

Revenue records in much of India were created long before metrication, so bigha, biswa, katha, marla, kanal, guntha, cent and ground still appear in mutation entries, sale deeds and village maps. If a document quotes a regional unit, confirm the local conversion in writing rather than assuming a national standard.
