How the brick count is worked out

  1. Net wall area — length × height, minus the area of any doors and windows you enter.
  2. Wall volume — net area converted to square metres, multiplied by the wall thickness in metres.
  3. Nominal brick size — each brick occupies its own size plus a 10 mm mortar joint, so a 190 × 90 × 90 mm brick occupies a 200 × 100 × 100 mm block, i.e. 0.002 m³.
  4. Count — wall volume ÷ 0.002 gives 500 bricks per cubic metre. A 5% wastage allowance is added and the answer rounded up.

This calculator uses the IS modular brick. If your supplier's bricks differ, the count will shift — measure ten bricks, take the average, and adjust the constant in our code or scale the result proportionally.

Wall thickness explained

  • 4.5 inch (half brick, 114 mm) — internal partitions and non-load-bearing walls. Bricks are laid on edge in a single leaf.
  • 9 inch (full brick, 229 mm) — the standard load-bearing external wall in Indian construction.
  • 13.5 inch (one and a half brick, 343 mm) — heavy load-bearing walls, retaining walls and lower storeys of taller masonry buildings.

Practical tips

  • Soak bricks before laying. Dry bricks pull water out of the mortar and weaken the bond. Six to eight hours of soaking is typical.
  • Keep joints to 10 mm. Thicker joints waste mortar and reduce wall strength.
  • Order 5–10% extra. Breakage in transit, cutting at corners and rejects at the kiln all eat into your delivered count.
  • Cure the masonry. Sprinkle water on newly built walls for at least seven days.
